What moved you about Todoroki was not that they were bad at being honest. Plenty of characters cannot say what they mean, and you did not remember all of them either.

Toughness and a flat tone are not a personality - they are a layer glued on from the outside. In most stories, the payoff is the layer coming off: the crying, the confession, the finally-said thing. But what stuck with you from Todoroki's scene was probably not the sound of it coming off. It was that the other person did not leave once it had. Or that they stepped one pace closer instead.

Being seen through is frightening. Somewhere along the way you learned that if you are found out, the relationship ends - that is why the front exists at all. What Todoroki was handed was not strength and it was not honesty. It was a single piece of evidence: found out, and it did not end.

Which is why you keep going back to it. Not the moment the front comes down, but what the other person does the second after. You are not watching someone break. You are watching what is still standing between two people once they have.

And where that leaves you now

One remembered picture gets added here. What you picked was Todoroki's face, frozen, the moment they got caught out. That view only exists from inside the one who got caught.

You probably have a front of your own. The uncomfortable part is not having it taken down - it is not knowing what happens once it is. So what you are actually waiting for is not a kind person. It is someone who does not leave once it is down. Asking for that outright would collapse the whole test, so you do not ask. You just watch to see who stays.

Something worth checking. Has anyone ever seen you drop the act and stayed exactly the same afterward? If a face comes to mind, what did that person get to see that no one else has? If nothing comes to mind, is that because no one has been there - or because you have not tested anyone yet?
