The habit that filled a gap and then replaced it

Out of every character you could have named, you named Kurapika. What gets read here is that choice itself.

What you were looking at

What moved you about Kurapika was not effort, and it was not refusing to quit. People who work hard are not rare in this genre, and you did not tear up over all of them. So the hard work itself is not what separated this one out. Something in why the running started did.

Kurapika did not start running toward a goal. Kurapika started running because something was missing, and running was the method chosen to close that gap. One method, sharpened past reason, past what the gap actually required. Up to there it would still be a story about effort. What you reacted to is past that point - the moment the method quietly became the person running it. Not filling anymore. If Kurapika stopped, there would be no one left standing where Kurapika used to be.

There is hardship in that, but hardship is not what moved you. What you were watching is a switch: the thing chosen only as a stopgap turned, without anyone deciding it, into the best and most recognizable part of the person doing it. Something that began from a lack became the whole shape.

Which means you are not someone who is drawn to effort paying off. You are someone who can spot the exact second a method stops serving its purpose and starts being the purpose.

And where that leaves you now

One remembered picture gets added here. What you picked was not the finish line and not anyone watching. You picked Kurapika's hands, moving, with nobody there to see them. That is the position of the person doing the work, not the person admiring it.

You probably have something of your own that you have kept going a long time. And the reason you started it and the reason you are still doing it are, by now, most likely two different reasons. When someone asks, you give them the current one. The first reason tends not to come up.

One thing worth checking. The thing you have kept going the longest - can you still say why you started it? If the answer will not come, is that because you forgot, or because it is already filled and you kept running anyway?
