What moved you about Gaara was not that you like stories where effort finally pays off. Those stories are everywhere, and you did not cry at every one of them.

Gaara had a space that stayed empty for a long time, and never once asked anyone to fill it. Whether that was because they could not ask, or because they never noticed they wanted it filled in the first place, differs from person to person - but the asking never happened. It might come out as acting up, or acting cheerful, or pretending not to care. The surface changes. The refusal to ask does not.

What you remember is that unasked-for thing being handed over anyway, by someone you did not expect to be the one handing it. What lands is not the size of what was given. It is the order it arrived in - it came before it was asked for.

Something you asked for and got would not produce this particular kind of crying. What you were watching was not the filling of the space. It was that space being filled in front of someone who never believed it would be.

And where that leaves you now

One remembered picture gets added here. What you picked was the face staring at the thing being handed over. That view belongs to the person receiving it.

You probably have things you have never asked for too. Not because you do not want them - because asking means that if you are turned down, you lose the ability to tell yourself afterward that you never wanted it in the first place. So you get there first, and call it not wanting. When you say "it is fine either way," it probably is not.

One thing worth checking. Can you name one thing you want someone to do for you, that you have never once asked for? If you can name it, you are not unaware of it. You are choosing to withhold it. When did you decide to withhold it?
