The place where nobody asked you to explain yourself

Out of every character you could have named, you named Anya. What gets read here is that choice itself.

What you were looking at

What moved you about Anya was not cuteness, and it was not the calm of watching them. Plenty of things are cute, plenty of things are calming to watch, and you do not remember all of them.

Anya does not fit the shapes around them. The logic does not track, the manners do not apply, sometimes it is not even clear what they are. Ordinarily, that gets a person - or a creature - questioned first. Why are you like this. Why are you here. Are you going to fix it. Not fitting a shape usually means being asked to account for yourself before anything else happens.

What you remember is the version where that request never showed up. Anya gets to stay - unexplained, unproven - and nobody standing nearby treats it as a problem that needs solving.

What you were looking at was not a cute face. It was a world granting permission without demanding a reason first. Which means the scene has stayed with you not because it was warm, but because you already know how rarely that kind of permission gets handed out in the world you actually live in.

And where that leaves you now

One remembered picture gets added here. What you picked was the view Anya was looking at - the same angle, the same direction, not a shot of their face. You were not watching them. You were standing where they stood.

You probably do not fit the shape completely either. Not in any way that draws attention - you can adjust when you need to, and you spend a lot of hours adjusting. What wears you down is probably not the adjusting itself. It is being asked why, and needing a good answer ready.

One thing worth checking. Has there been a place where you never had to explain yourself? When it comes to mind, what shows up first - a person, or just the room?
